With over 15 years of experience as a frontend engineer and manager, I've built design systems and web apps using my deep understanding of HTML, CSS, and JS, with many different tools and frameworks on top such as TypeScript, React, Redux, Svelte, and Lit. I still have fond memories of Backbone and jQuery, too.
I've used all kinds of other tools as well, such as Webpack, Vite, and Storybook, just to name a few, and I keep a close eye on ever-evolving native Web Platform features.
While my core interests are around UI & UX development, I’ve also worked with numerous backend technologies including Next.js, Rails, Django, and others.
As an engineer, a manager, a designer, and a user, what matters most to me is building stuff that people actually want to use, and that means creating experiences that enable users to achieve their goals effectively and with minimal friction and frustration—software that is purposeful, well-designed, well-built, performant, resilient, and accessible.
I believe that less is more and that eliminating noise and supporting focus are critical factors in that endeavor, and that simple is usually better.
Creating high quality experiences effectively means building flexible, scalable, and accessible systems as their foundation, in particular design systems; the more solid the individual pieces are, the more solid the whole. Collaborating closely with my design and product counterparts on building and utilizing these systems has always been a major area of interest throughout my career.
Quality is key, but pragmatism is critical. As a technical leader and engineering manager, I always lead with this in mind, balancing business goals, UX, and technical debt against each other to ensure that the right experience is produced the right way, for users, for the business, and for the teams building it.
